Pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period come with many decisions some expected, others unexpected. When a healthcare provider proposes a test, procedure, or treatment plan for you or your baby, it’s important to remember one thing: you have the right to understand, ask questions, and make informed choices.
At Precious Moments Babeez Inc., we believe informed parents are empowered parents. Below is a thoughtfully curated guide of questions you can use to advocate for yourself and your baby when discussing any proposed care or treatment plan.
1. What Is Being Recommended and Why?
Start by clearly understanding what your provider is suggesting.
Consider asking:
- What exactly is the proposed treatment or intervention?
- Is this being recommended because there is a concern about my health or my baby’s health?
- Is this a standard recommendation for someone at my stage of pregnancy or postpartum recovery?
- Has something changed that prompted this recommendation?
- Is this medically necessary, or is it being suggested for convenience, routine, or precaution?
Understanding the reason behind a recommendation helps you determine whether it aligns with your values and needs.
2. How Is the Treatment Done?
Knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and help you prepare.
Ask questions such as:
- How is the procedure or treatment carried out?
- Will I need to prepare in advance?
- Who will be performing the treatment?
- Who is allowed to be with me during the procedure?
- What does recovery typically look like if everything goes as planned?
- What does recovery look like if complications arise?
Clarity around the process can help you feel more confident and supported.
3. What Are the Benefits?
Every treatment should have a clear purpose.
You may want to ask:
- What benefits are expected from this treatment?
- Will the benefits be immediate or develop over time?
- How will we recognize whether the treatment is working?
Understanding the benefits allows you to weigh whether they are meaningful to you and your baby.
4. What Are the Risks?
All treatments carry some level of risk, and it’s appropriate to discuss them openly.
Consider asking:
- What risks are associated with this treatment?
- Are the risks immediate or long-term?
- Could the risks affect me, my baby, or both?
- Are any of the risks life-altering or life-threatening?
- Who would bear the consequences if a complication occurs?
Informed consent means understanding both benefits and risks.
5. What Are the Alternatives?
You always have options, even if they aren’t initially presented.
Ask your provider:
- Are there alternative treatments or approaches?
- What are the risks and benefits of each alternative?
- What outcomes can we expect from alternative options?
- How would you feel if we chose a different path?
- Would choosing an alternative affect the quality of care my baby or I receive?
A respectful care team should support shared decision-making without judgment.
6. What If We Choose to Do Nothing?
Sometimes, waiting or declining intervention is a valid choice.
You might ask:
- What would happen if we decided not to proceed at this time?
- What signs or symptoms should we watch for?
- Will those signs be obvious to us, or only to medical professionals?
- Have you cared for other families who made this choice?
- Will my baby or I be denied care if we decline?
- Would Child Protective Services be involved if we choose not to proceed?
These questions help clarify the real-world implications of declining care and reduce fear-based decision-making.
7. How Much Time Do We Have to Decide?
Not every decision is an emergency.
Ask:
- Do we need to decide right away?
- Is the timeline medically necessary?
- How much time do we have to consider our options?
- Are other members of the healthcare team dependent on our decision immediately?
Time to reflect often leads to more confident, informed choices.
